Volvo services planned to 5 more towns from chennai

The government has decided to introduce Volvo bus services from Chennai to Sriperumbudur, Chengalpet, Sunguvarchathiram, Tiruvallur and Gummidipoondi.

Replying to Congress MLA E.S.S. Raman, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said the Volvo service between Chennai and Kancheepuram had good patronage.

The government had invited tenders to buy 100 Volvo buses and the process was on.

Mr. Nehru explained that Volvo buses were introduced in Chennai city as a status symbol, but the revenue generation was not encouraging and the transport corporation was not even able to achieve the break-even amount of Rs.15,000 a day.

“So we decided to allow display advertisements on the buses at the rate of Rs.4,800 per day. This helped achieve break-even. The revenue went up when the services were extended to Kancheepuram,” he said.
