Two lakh participants to run in Chennai Marathon

About two lakh participants from all over the world are expected to participate in the second edition of the 'Give Life Chennai Marathon 2009', to be held here on August 22.

Organised by the city-based Tamil Maiyam and Goodwill Communications Ltd, the proceeds of 21.09 km run would be used to provide assistance to the underprivileged children.

A total of 8460 children have been enlisted for assistance this year, Fr Jegath Gasper Raj of Tamil Mayam told reporters here on Saturday.

The theme for this year's run would be awareness on diseases like obesity and diabetes, he said, adding the total prize money for the event is around Rs 27 lakh.

The prize money for winners of the Men and Women categories will be Rs five lakh.

A 'Lean Food Mela', highlighting the need for fibrous, healthy food and a 'Breakfast Festival' presenting the various breakfast dishes from the State would also be held, he said.

Last year around 1.7 lakh people participated in the run, which include 5800 professional runners, he added.
